Irish seafood showcased to Asian buyers
Fourteen Irish seafood companies exhibited on the Bord Bia stand at the China Seafood & Fisheries Expo in Qingdao. The Expo, which ran from November 1-3, is the largest seafood trade event in Asia, attracting 28,000 visitors from over 100 countries.

In 2013, China's seafood trade surpassed €20 billion in value, cementing its position as the world's leading seafood trading country, according to Ireland's food export agency, Bord Bia.

Online marketing to reach China’s 1.5bn consumers
Over 35% of the world's seafood production is consumed by China's 1.5 billion population whose average per capita consumption is set to rise to 39kg by 2020.
From 2006-2011, added-value seafood sales rose by almost 9% and online seafood sales are predicted to increase by up to 300% (2016 & 2017) of which 80-90% from the frozen category, according to Bord Bia, Ireland's Food Board.

Communications expert and entrepreneur with 'Dragons' Den' fame, Gavin Duffy, is to moderate the BIM 2017 seafood conference, Winning in a Changing Environment, June 29, Galway.
His experience as a 'skilled conference moderator' will greatly enhance the effective delivery of a busy conference programme 'and a more interactive delegate experience'.

Ireland's marine minister, Michael Creed, will deliver the opening address at the 2017 BIM national seafood conference in Galway (June 29).
Minister Creed will outline his views on how his Department 'will ensure that seafood continues to play a vital role' in Ireland's agri-food sector, to maximise its contribution to economic growth and exports in an environmentally-sustainable manner.
Former Bord Bia executive to head up seafood development agency
The board of BIM has appointed Jim O’Toole, former director of meat and livestock sustainability development, as its chief executive, who will bring to the position ‘a wealth of experience in global food marketing, sustainability development and change leadership’.
Prior to leadig Bord Bia’s 'Origin Green' initiative, Mr O’Toole was responsible for implementing the agency’s 'Quality Assurance Scheme', gaining experience working in London, Milan and Paris.
Irish brown crab to reappear on Chinese market
Ireland’s crab trade into China is expected to resume next month following agreement on the certificates that will accompany consignments. Irish authority (SFPA) and Chinese authority (AQSIQ) have reached technical agreement on a methodology designed to resolve certification, based on a national monitoring programme of animals destined for the Chinese market.
Minister Michael Creed and Minister Zhi Shuping reach agreement to resume Irish brown crab exports to China
The SFPA will implement the monitoring, and apprise seafood exporters of the specific requirements attaching to consignments that in turn will be monitored on arrival by the Chinese authorities.
Call for entries for 2018 BIM Young Fishmonger Awards
BIM, Ireland's seafood development agency, has launched a nationwide campaign to find the most talented and knowledgeable young fishmongers.
Entries are invited for the BIM Young Fishmonger Award, the BIM Seafood Retail Business Award for 2018, along with the BIM Seafood Retail Business Award to pinpint Ireland's 'most progressive, professional and knowledgeable' retail businesses.
