Cork school named ‘Something fishy’ winners 2015

Fifth and sixth class students from St Mary’s Senior School, Dunmanway, Co Cork, have been crowned national winners of the Inland Fisheries Ireland Something Fishy competition.

The students received the award and a €700 prize for their project, The Wonderful Water Kids Show, comprising a digital and artistic video interpretation of this year’s themes, ‘Water a Precious Commodity’ and ‘Water Quality and the Environment’. School Principal, Mairead Twohig, accepted the award  on behalf of the students.

“Something Fishy is an educational resource designed and promoted by IFI in conjunction with the Blackrock Educational Centre. It ensures that children do not become an ‘endangered species’ on the banks of rivers, lakes and our coast. In a typical year, we bring the programme to around 100 schools,” explained Suzanne Campion.

The programme is based on the life cycle of salmon and get students to explore water, fish stocks, angling, river and lake conservation, and fish as part of the food chain. Students are also brought onto the water to get a hands-on experience.
