‘Hooked’ seafood festival in Killybegs

The first seafood festival at Ireland’s premier pelagic port has been deemed a great sucess by the organisers, and plans are already underway for next year’s event.

Supported by the BIM Fisheries Local Action Group programme, ‘Hooked!’ celebrated the fishing heritage of Killybegs and included a chowder making competition alongside a showcase of locally caught fish and shellfish displays. Competition winner, Nancy’s Bar, Ballyliffen will represent Donegal in the 2016 National Chowder Competition in Kinsale, Co Cork.

The importance of innovation and sustainability was outlined by technicians from BIM’s Seafood Development Centre who showcased their services to assist seafood companies visiting their centres in Clonakilty, Co Cork and Killbegs.

Frances O’Dwyer explained the agency’s lobster ‘v-notching’ and conservation programmes, and outlined how to differentiate between male & female lobsters and legal landing sizes.
