Local boats take majority of silverware in Ireland’s biggest sailing event

Four days of racing (July 11-14) in the Volvo Dún Laoghaire Regatta came to a close in a light northerly breeze of six knots, and the bulk of the spoils going to local clubs.

Dublin yacht clubs clinched 19 of the 34 classes including the coveted ‘Boat of the Week’ Trophy, awarded to David Gorman’s Flying Fifteen, Betty, (National YC) after leading a 24-boat one design fleet with seven race wins in a ten-race series.

Almost all of the scheduled 290 races in five courses went ahead, giving the organisers a mighty task to coordinate the 500 boats and almost 2,500 sailors and a wait to the final day for many classes.

The biennial event, involving the four waterfront clubs: Dún Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club, Royal Irish Yacht Club, Royal St George Yacht Club and the National Yacht Club, has been heralded as an ‘enormous success’ both afloat and ashore.
