Marine Institute marks World Ocean Day

Under the theme ‘The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods, the United Nations says World Ocean Day (June 8) reminds us about the major role the oceans play in everyday life.

‘They are the lungs of our Planet and a major source of food and medicine and critical part of the biosphere’.

In recognition of World Ocean Day, the Marine Institute joined organisations across the country for the Oceans of Learning series to celebrate Ireland’s marine resource.

World’s Oceans Day also highlights ways to protect and conserve the oceans. The Marine Institute in collaboration with RTÉ today premieres a short film: Dive Deep with the ROV Holland 1, which looks at cold-water corals, shipwrecks and rare shark nursery in Irish waters.

Ireland’s seabed territory is one of the largest in Europe and is more than 10 times Ireland’s landmass. The 7,500 km coastline is longer than many European countries; more over 40% of Ireland’s population lives within five kilometres of the coast.

The waters around Ireland are described as a ‘national asset’, supporting diverse ecosystems. They are a source of food, influence climate and weather, and enhance overall well being.

Th oceans also play an important role in Ireland’s economy, providing employment in fisheries, aquaculture, ports and shipping, technology, tourism and seafaring. At an annual turnover of almost €6 billion, Ireland’s ocean economy is a significant contributor to the national economy, providing full-time employment for 31,000 people
