Swimming Against the Current
A dramatic documentary following four boats from the Aran Islands, as they journey from Ros a’ Mhíl to the Shetland Islands, in search of the elusive mackerel.

Star of Hope and Oileán An Óir pair trawling
The method of fishing used by these fishermen to catch mackerel requires skill in this dangerous environment. When the four boats left Ros a’ Mhíl the skippers had no idea that only three boats would return. The events that played out on the 20th of January changed the expedition entirely. Iúda Naofa got in to difficulty off the isle of Lewis and sank.
The documentary goes on to reveal how the skippers of each boat dealt with the implications of this loss and the impact that the event had on the remainder of the journey.Did they manage to catch their quota and did the crews make a safe return?
Produced by Independent company Meangadh Fíbín for TG4 and directed and shot by crew member, Mícheál Conneely from Aran Islands.
