Ireland’s ‘blue economy’ is premium performer
Ireland’s maritime economy grew by 9% from 2010-2012 against general growth in GDP of 4.75%, according to the 3rd Report on Ireland’s Ocean Economy published by the Socio-Economic Marine Research Unit (SEMRU) in Galway.

Latest figures for 2012-2014 continue this trend with growth rates of 8% and employment increase from 17,425 to 18,480 full-time equivalents.

The value of Ireland’s maritime economy, commercial opportunities and its contribution to the Irish economy will be discussed at a major industry conference, Our Ocean Wealth, on July 10 in Ringaskiddy, Co Cork.
Speaking at the launch, marine minister Simon Coveney said growth in Ireland’s blue economy underpins the potential of the marine resource.
Industry experts from Ireland the EU and USA are set to convene on the site of the new €15m Beaufort building, along with an anticipated 600-strong delegation.
Karmenu Vella, EU Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, will lead the discussion on managment and ocean governance, and enhancing Europe’s maritime competitiveness while protecting the environment.
Barrie Stevens, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) will deliver a keynote address on the future of the marine ecomony, and speakers from across the maritime sector will present on R&D, energy, commerce and tourism.
The programme also includes panel discussions, workshops and an exhibition of industry start-ups, university spin-outs and established companies led by Marine Renewable Energy Ireland.
